A view of the Allier river seen from the Guetin canal bridge in Cuffy, France on August 9, 2022. With an early heatwave in June and an unusually hot and dry month of May, the bed of the Loire has reached a lower level than usual, so much so that the river can be crossed on foot in certain places. Two-thirds of the country are at crisis level for drought. Four recent heatwaves have triggered weeks of wildfires and reduced the mighty Loire to a stream in some stretches. Last week, the government said 100 places were without safe tap water. Photo by Pascal Avenet/ABACAPRESS.COM

Canoeists travel down the Midouze River at Mont-de-Marsan, south-western France, on August 9, 2022, as France saw its driest July on record, the national weather agency said, exacerbating stretched water resources that have forced restrictions. - The French government said that it had activated a crisis task force to coordinate efforts to alleviate the impacts of a "historic" drought exacerbated by a third extreme heatwave of the summer. Water restrictions have already been ordered in nearly all of France's 96 mainland departments, with 62 at the highest alert level, and the Meteo-France weather agency has forecast little relief for the coming weeks. "This drought is the worst ever recorded in our country... the situation could persist for the next two weeks or become even worse," the office of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said in a statement. The dry conditions are a "disaster" for farmers across the country as well as for "our ecosystems and biodiversity," it added. (Photo by GAIZKA IROZ / AFP)
